Digital Skills Training (EduBytes)

“The future is already here, it’s just not very evenly distributed” – William Gibson

With the rise of new technologies, especially Generative AI, which creates images, text, videos, and sounds to enhance productivity across sectors, including education, many still lack access to these tools and risk being left behind. Our digital skills initiatives are designed to close this gap in Ghana by ensuring that no community is left out of the digital future.

EDUBYTES

EduBytes is a certified monthly training programme that builds practical digital competencies and supports the career growth of over 400 Catalysts across the EduSpots network. Each training cycle focuses on one skill gap identified by Catalysts themselves, ensuring the programme remains relevant, impactful, and community-driven.

Canva Beginner Training – Our Launch Module

“Had I not taken part in the Canva training, I would not have had the skills to support my community in such a meaningful way.” – Isaac Ohene, Atanve Spot

The inaugural EduBytes session focused on Canva design fundamentals—navigation, template customisation, colour use, graphics, text styling, and collaboration. Catalysts now apply these skills in their Spots and classrooms to build local content, enhance storytelling, and expose learners to digital creativity.

Google Docs for Communication & Collaboration

“I have really learnt how to use the phone to type information just as a laptop can do.” – Rita

The third module enhanced Catalysts’ skills in creating, editing, and collaborating on documents using Google Docs. This training helped participants streamline communication, improve teamwork, and work more efficiently, using only a mobile device when needed.

How EduBytes Works

  • Each monthly session tackles a specific digital skills gap.
  • Interested Catalysts register and join a dedicated WhatsApp learning community.
  • Participants attend a 60-minute virtual session each week for four weeks.
  • Weekly hands-on assignments encourage practical application.
  • Peer learning continues on the EduBytes WhatsApp hub, fostering support, idea-sharing, and collaboration.
  • A final project and survey conclude the programme, followed by a virtual graduation for all Catalysts who meet the required pass mark.

Upcoming modules include: Generative AI for Classrooms, Personal Branding, Google Sheets, Google Forms, Digital Storytelling, and more.

DIGITAL SKILLS & FOOTPRINT TRAINING ACROSS THE NETWORK

In July 2025, more than 300 Catalysts participated in digital footprint and digital skills sessions delivered across all 50 EduSpots communities through the collaboration of Catalysts, staff, and local resource persons.

Digital Footprint Training

“… I have realised today that anything you put on the internet can never be erased easily and can affect you in one way or another.” – Enoch, Nkonya Spot

Through storytelling and real-life scenarios, Catalysts explored how every online action contributes to their digital identity. They conducted practical exercises, including online self-audits through Google Search, and signed a Digital Footprint Manifesto to commit to responsible online behaviour for themselves and their communities.

Digital Skills Training

“During the PowerPoint training… I am going to use it in my school, as I am an ICT teacher and I don’t even get access to a computer… This is going to help me.” – Nafisa, Ejura Spot

Alongside the footprint session, Catalysts selected one digital skill to strengthen their impact. Regional and cluster-level training covered:

  • Video editing
  • Microsoft Office tools
  • AI basics
  • Google Drive
  • Professional email writing
  • Online collaboration tools (Zoom & Google Meet)

Across all communities, 50 hands-on sessions equipped Catalysts to apply digital tools in teaching, Spot activities, and community projects.

As a result, every participating Catalyst gained at least one essential digital competency, including data literacy, collaboration, digital content creation, problem-solving, and online safety. They can now record student data using Excel, create content with InShot or CapCut, use AI for writing support, send professional emails, and research effectively.
