Kato Berekum

Kato-Berekum Spot is a proud member of the EduSpots network. The Spot is located in Kato, Berekum Municipality of Ghana’s Bono Region. The Spot operates side-by-side the Asuama-Kyere Community Mobile Library Ghana (AKCOMLIB-GH).

The Spot was founded by Nana Afia Siraa-Ababio III, the Queen Mother of the Werempe Division of Berekum Traditional Council/ Queen Mother of Kato, and Executive Director of AKCOMLIB-GH. Already running a Community Mobile library and promoting literacy initiatives since 2012, Nana Afia saw the opportunity to plant deeper roots in her community. In November 2024, Kato officially joined the EduSpots network.

Currently, Spot activities are held at the Werempe Division of the Berekum Traditional Council palace, which serves as a temporary learning space for 58 learners aged 5 to 17.

The Spot was founded to support children and youth through access to books, mentorship, and cultural enrichment. It aimed to transition from mobile outreach to a sustainable community learning space that promotes leadership, confidence, and skills development, especially among underserved learners.

The Spot is currently led by 12 community-based changemakers (Catalysts). These Catalysts consist of local teachers, artisans, and learners who benefited from the mobile library. The Catalysts take part in the EduSpots Spot Lead strand to enhance their leadership, safeguarding, and project management skills to manage the Spot, guide learners in club activities, and respond to local needs.

The impact of the community learning centre is clear and progressive:

  • Learners now have the confidence to lead events; an example is a 9-year-old female learner who hosted a quiz show.
  • Reading is now a lifestyle, with learners committing to at least one book a week.
  • Catalysts have grown into confident educators and community role models.
  • Parents, elders, and chiefs now contribute, attending events and cheering on the learners.
  • Cultural pride is reignited, with traditional foods, dress, dance and language celebrated weekly.

Looking ahead, our dream is to establish a permanent structure, a learning centre with a reading garden, digital tools, and space for creativity.
