Kejabil

Kejabil is a small peasant farming community with a few corporate workers, located in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region of Ghana. In October 2024, Mrs. Sarah Gyimah Danso Dick, the Headteacher of Kejabil M/A Basic School, founded the Kejabil Spot, becoming the second EduSpot to be established within the Apowa Circuit of the municipality.

Today, the Spot is actively run by nine dedicated Catalysts (volunteers), who guide learners through EduSpots’ wide range of programmes. Their mission is to instil a culture of reading and writing, build learners’ confidence, and equip Catalysts with relevant skills for community development and personal growth.

From the outset, Kejabil Spot enrolled in two key EduSpots strands: Ignite Equity and Spot Leadership.

Ignite Equity, led by Joyce Nartey, supports learners to advocate for gender equity and inclusivity. It challenges gender stereotypes and equips young people to find innovative solutions to issues in their communities.

Spot Leadership focuses on building the leadership capacity of Catalysts. Through this strand, they are trained to lead initiatives that address local challenges through education.

As part of their monthly challenges, learners have engaged in a variety of meaningful and impactful activities, including:

  • Spelling Bee competitions
  • Organising peaceful community election campaigns
  • SDG-themed walks
  • Pancake-making sessions to build teamwork and entrepreneurship
  • Educational talks on menstrual hygiene and nocturnal emission
  • “Keeping Spots Safe” awareness sessions

These initiatives have significantly boosted learners’ self-confidence, expanded their understanding of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and encouraged open dialogue on safety and emotional well-being.

The Kejabil Spot is committed to:

  • Enhancing literacy and digital skills, equipping learners to take charge of their future.
  • Providing access to diverse educational resources, including books, magazines, and digital materials that support varied learning needs and interests.
  • Promoting a reading culture by offering materials that nurture curiosity and foster lifelong learning.
  • Supporting formal education through supplemental resources that aid research, study, and academic achievement.
  • Equipping Catalysts with leadership and project management skills, enabling them to sustainably manage the Spot and respond to the evolving needs of the community.

The establishment of Kejabil Spot was made possible through the collective effort and unwavering support of community stakeholders, including the Chiefs, Elders, PTA/SMC Executives, the Assemblyman, and the Headteacher. Their collaboration stands as a powerful example of community-led change.

Looking ahead, we envision the Kejabil Spot as a beacon of sustainable impact, enhancing literacy, nurturing confidence, and preparing young minds to lead with purpose.
