Soko

Soko Spot joined the EduSpots network in November 2023. The Spot is situated in the Soko D/A Primary School in the Afigya Kwabre North District in the Ashanti Region.

The Spot was founded by Ms Helena Atteh, after she was posted from Ahenkro, where she served as an EduSpots Catalyst, to Soko as a headteacher. Upon resuming her role as a headteacher of Soko D/A Primary School, she observed that learners’ ability to read, speak and write was very low.

To address this challenge, she introduced EduSpots to the staff team, with emphasis on the Literacy & Digital Skills Strand (DigiLit) – a combination of digital skills and literacy. She testified about how learners of Ahenkro Basic School have benefited from EduSpots and the DigiLit strand, leading to an increase in their confidence level to express themselves in English and use digital tools for learning.

For the past years, learners have had challenges with expressing themselves in English, hence, the use of the local dialect in the classroom and communication with peers. They also had no idea about basic computing, for instance, how to type, how to use the search engines or the websites to access basic information and to help them do their assignment.

This led us to sign up for the EduSpots DigiLit strand, whose main aim is to build the foundational literacy and digital skills of learners in primary 4 to 6. By the intervention of EduSpots and the DigiLit strand, there’s been an improvement in learners’ reading, writing, speaking and digital skills.

The Spot is currently being managed by a Spot management committee and  8 community-based changemakers (Catalysts). These Catalysts take part in the EduSpots’ Spot Lead strand to enhance their leadership capacity to find solutions to challenges in their community, while facilitating and guiding learners to support them in building their literacy skills.

Surprisingly, EduSpots was well received by the community members of Soko. Members of the community would rather maintain their old ways of doing things and are not easily convinced to accept something new. However, EduSpots was an exception; they received the idea with open arms and pledged their allegiance to support the initiative on all fronts. Ensuring that teachers, parents, community members, and community leaders work together to provide learners with a safe space to learn and grow into the future leaders they hope for.
