Asemasa

Asemasa Spot is located in the farming community of Asemasa in Ghana’s Western Region, where a quiet yet powerful transformation in education began in August 2024. That month marked the community’s official entry into the EduSpots network, opening a new chapter of opportunity for over 198 young learners.

Asemasa is a close-knit community rooted in agriculture, where families work hard to provide for their children and place great value on education. Despite this, many learners faced challenges with reading fluency, limited exposure to digital learning, and a lack of confidence in expressing themselves. Recognising these gaps, the community came together with a shared determination to reimagine learning beyond the classroom.

The Spot was established at Asemasa Catholic MA Basic School as a safe and inclusive learning space where literacy, leadership, and technology could thrive together. What was once an ordinary classroom has been transformed into a vibrant hub of learning, equipped with donated books and digital tablets. It is now a space where curiosity is nurtured, ideas are explored, and young people are empowered to grow.

At the heart of Asemasa Spot is a committed team of 13 Catalysts, passionate community-based changemakers supported by parents and local leaders. Together, they have built a culture of encouragement, consistency, and purpose, making the Spot a centre of inspiration within the community.

To strengthen their impact, Asemasa Spot signed onto key EduSpots strands, including Spot Lead and EcoSTEM. Through Spot Lead, Catalysts are developing leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills to address local challenges. Through EcoSTEM, learners engage in hands-on activities that build critical thinking, collaboration, and resilience through the EcoUniverse challenges.

With support from EduSpots, the Spot received 100 books and two tablets, laying the foundation for a growing mini-library. While the space continues to evolve, the Spot was further equipped with shelves, tables, and chairs through the Catalyse leadership program to enhance the learning experience.

Each week, the Spot comes alive with structured and engaging activities. EcoSTEM sessions bring learners together to collaborate on real-world problems relating to the environment, while the introduction of the Girls’ Arena has created a safe space for girls to build confidence and speak up. Spot Lead sessions have also been transformative, helping Catalysts, many of whom once struggled with public speaking, to find their voice and lead with confidence.

The impact of Asemasa Spot is already evident. Learners who were once hesitant to speak are now confidently presenting during monthly challenges. They are developing not only academic skills but also the confidence, creativity, and leadership abilities needed to thrive in life. This growth is extending beyond the Spot, influencing their roles in school, at home, and within the wider community.

Looking ahead, Asemasa Spot envisions expanding its reach and deepening its impact. Plans include acquiring additional tablets to support digital learning, renovating the space to allow for evening sessions, and further developing the library with essential furniture and resources.

Asemasa Spot is a growing movement of hope, resilience, and possibility. With continued support and community commitment, it is well on its way to becoming a centre where every learner is empowered to discover their potential and shape their future.
