We are thrilled to announce our May Spot of the Month, Abutia Spot! Their consistent participation and disciplined learning strategies truly made them stand out this month!
In celebration of the Spot’s fantastic achievements, we heard from the Abutia Catalysts themselves in an interview hosted by John Nuvormawor, Peer Mentor, Catalysts Community. Through this interview, we gained exclusive insight into the Catalysts’ personal journeys, which led them to this title, inspiring the whole network with their passion and commitment.
Samuel Afadzinu, Spot Communications Lead, introduces Abutia as a fishing and farming community due to its proximity to the sea and lagoon, with the industries serving both local and domestic purposes. The Abutia community is located in Ghana’s Volta Region, while the Spot itself can be found in the Abutia Rhema Basic School. Samuel also stresses how “the people of Abutia value education” and therefore support the progress of young learners.
John Klu, a Catalyst from Posmonu and a native of Abutia, seeing the impact that EduSpots was having on the Catalysts, learners and Posmonu community, decided to introduce the network to the Abutia team. The Spot was established towards the end of 2024 and became active, and started running fully in 2025. This was possible through the leadership of Samuel Afadzinu and Wise K. Afadzinu, with support from teachers of the Abutia Rhema Basic School, who are now all Catalysts of the Abutia Spot. Not forgetting the significant contributions of community leaders and members as well.
The Catalysts of Abutia embraced the mentality of becoming “global citizens” to enact positive change in both themselves and the learners. Wise Kofi Afadinzu, Spot Lead, perfectly encapsulates this messages: “Seeing learners gain confidence, think critically, and express themselves creatively inspires me every day, and that motivates me to do my best to help them realise their potentials because by doing so, I also discover hidden talents that I can showcase from within me.” This self-sustaining structure of mutual growth is especially demonstrated by the Catalysts’ increased digital literacy through the EduSpot DigiLit programme.
Club sessions in Abutia Spot always start with an energiser to motivate the Sparks(learners) as they work together to complete their monthly challenges. Some club sessions are also held outside of the Spot to encourage Sparks to engage more with nature. The engaging and inclusive club sessions at Abutia give Sparks a reason to always look forward to the next session.
Spot team at Abutia is highly driven by committed teamwork, which they develop through “building on each others’ strengths and encouraging open communication,” according to Gifty Seshie, Spot Treasurer. By cultivating a respectful, creative environment, the Spot maintains unity in its goals, and each individual task is more rewarding.
In response to winning Spot of the Month, the Abutia Catalysts are incredibly proud and motivated even further. Their gratitude and humility reflect EduSpots’ fundamental values, and they encourage other Spots to “not allow anything to weigh you down.” Wise shares how even small efforts to empower learners will help to shape the future of our communities, and urges Abutia to “keep the fire burning.” The Catalysts’ unfailing optimism and persistence is incredibly inspiring, and we encourage them to continue to pave the way for the rest of the network.
