Abofour Spot: A Decade of Impact, Innovation, and Inspiration!

A big congratulations to our dedicated Catalysts in Abofour for their outstanding efforts!

Their strong communication and active engagement set them apart, making them well-deserving of the Spot of the Month award for December 2024. Keep up the great work!

In recognition of this huge achievement, our Operations and Middle Region Spot Coordinator, Seidu, interviewed some of Abofour’s valuable Catalysts, who shared their knowledge and experience of working in the Abofour Spot.

About Abofour Spot:

Abofour is a small town with a population of 2500 located in the Offinso Municipality. Abofour’s Spot has been running since 2015, and is this year celebrating its 10 year anniversary alongside EduSpots itself. The Spot is located inside the Messiah International School, and was originally set up by the Addae family and local teachers. With Catalysts actively leading clubs in all four strands – EduKidz, DigiLit, EcoSTEM and Ignite Equity – Abofour has established itself as a safe space for learners seeking community and growth.

The Spot currently has 20 hard-working Catalysts, and in the coming months are looking to recruit even more. From Monday to Saturday, the Spot’s doors are open to learners, or Sparks, both during the day and in the evening, with a consistent schedule of daily activities which focus on each of the four core strands of EduSpots.

Abofour often leads local projects to engage and inspire both the local community and the wider EduSpots network, and have shown this through the following initiatives:

Green Spot Innovation Project:

Abofour’s efforts to contribute to the Spot-wide Green Spot Innovation Challenge have not gone unnoticed. The project’s aim was to design a sustainable solution to address an ongoing environmental challenge in the local community. After identifying the issue of plastic and paper waste in Abofour, a recycling system was designed to help reduce waste. This involves reaching out to the local community to collect waste materials, such as collecting old fabric from dressmakers. Their creativity and dedication earned them third place in the Green Spot Innovation Challenge, securing a GHS 1,000 grant to bring their sustainability project to life.

The Face of EduSpots:

In December, the Abofour Catalysts also organised an end-of-year event with the vision of establishing an annual fundraising programme which will help the library in the future. This event, “The Face of EduSpots,” was proposed by Spot Lead Franklin three weeks before vacation, with the idea of getting Sparks involved in an event where they could demonstrate what they had learnt by participating in performances and competitions. The day included dance productions, competitions such as bottle flipping and spelling and other educational activities like digital reading. It was hugely successful and at the end of the day, all of the contestants took home prizes as reward for their hard work.

Kwame’s Adventures:

Abofour has been one of the Spots to be featured in the book series Kwame’s Adventures after submitting a synopsis of the story they wanted to be told. To encourage other Spots to do the same, Glow a Catalyst from Abofour Spot shared how meaningful it is to see your hometown being published in one of these books: “It’s a wonderful opportunity. Your voice is heard and your community feels alive and connected to the story.” Glow also encourages other Spots to submit their own synopsis as it has the potential to “unleash talents” of Catalysts and Sparks.

Next steps:

When asked what being part of EduSpots means to them, Catalyst Glow shared a powerful response: “We are the change our community needs. In any small way we can, let’s continue to impact lives.” Their words reflect the dedication and drive of the Abofour team, reminding us that even the smallest actions can create lasting change. The Catalysts in Abofour continue to inspire other communities in EduSpots, and Franklin, the Spot Lead, believes that this is due to their “intrinsic motivation and genuine passion to drive change.” Their enthusiastic engagement in Spot projects makes them an excellent role model for other Spots to emulate. Abofour is motivated by their strong end to the year, and in 2025 “are looking forward to winning Spot of the Year.” We cannot wait to see what comes next for the Abofour team.
