“No effort is too small when it comes to making a difference.”
We are delighted to celebrate Gabriel Afadzinu of Abutia Spot as our Catalyst of the Month for January, recognising his dedication, humility, and commitment to supporting Sparks on their learning journeys.
When he first heard the news of his recognition, Gabriel admitted he was genuinely surprised. “Frankly, this came as a surprise to me. I never knew I had been nominated,” he shared. For him, the recognition is both humbling and motivating, encouraging him to continue contributing positively to the work being done at Abutia Spot.
Throughout January, what motivated Gabriel the most was the enthusiasm of the Sparks themselves. Their eagerness to learn often went beyond scheduled sessions, with many choosing to spend their break times participating in activities and completing project-based activities.
Their excitement was also visible beyond the Spot. “Sometimes you meet them in town on a Saturday or Sunday, and they shout ‘EduSpots!’,” Gabriel explained. “Moments like that remind you that the work you are doing truly means something to them.” These interactions strengthened his commitment and inspired him to continue showing up consistently for the learners.
One initiative Gabriel is particularly proud of is building confidence among the younger learners, especially the Edukidz. Through creative activities, they were encouraged to express themselves in front of the camera by reading aloud, dancing, or sharing something they had learned.
The aim was not only to develop their communication skills but also to help them overcome shyness. By guiding and encouraging them throughout the process, Gabriel helped create an environment where Sparks felt comfortable expressing themselves and celebrating their creativity.
Like many catalysts, Gabriel’s journey has also come with challenges. At the beginning of the month, participation among some EcoSTEM Sparks was quite low. Because the strand includes several activities and tasks, sessions are sometimes extended beyond regular school hours and even require meeting on weekends.
This occasionally meant sacrificing personal time. However, Gabriel remained patient and persistent, encouraging the Sparks and helping them understand the long-term benefits of participating in the strand.
Gradually, their interest grew and participation improved. Their collective effort paid off when the team secured third place in the January Challenge, making the hard work and extra time worthwhile.
Being part of EduSpots has also played an important role in shaping Gabriel’s development as a leader and educator. Through the experience, he has strengthened his ability to work collaboratively and has learned to think creatively when addressing challenges.
Some situations require new ideas and approaches, and the program has encouraged him to explore solutions that are both practical and innovative.
Gabriel believes one of the personal qualities that contributes to his growth is his strong desire to excel in whatever he does. Even when others outperform him, he sees it as an opportunity to learn and continue improving.
For him, the Sparks remain the greatest source of inspiration. Their curiosity and determination to learn constantly remind him of the impact that small efforts can have in shaping young minds.
Reflecting on lessons he has learned as a Catalyst, Gabriel emphasises the importance of appreciation and recognising the efforts of Sparks, even in simple ways, can make a powerful difference.
“Everyone wants to feel recognised,” he explained. Encouraging comments, such as applauding a Spark’s effort or celebrating their ideas, help them feel valued and motivated to keep learning.
Looking ahead, Gabriel hopes to remain actively involved across all the strands at Abutia Spot. More importantly, he hopes to continue supporting the Sparks while contributing to the growth of the Spot and its learning community.
To fellow Catalysts, Gabriel shares:
“No effort is too small when it comes to making a difference. Put in the little you have, and you will be surprised at how much it can contribute to the greater good.”
We celebrate Gabriel for his commitment during January and also for the supportive learning environment he continues to nurture at Abutia Spot.
Congratulations, Gabriel! Your dedication continues to inspire Sparks and fellow Catalysts across the EduSpots network.
