“I believe I have a role to play in this journey, and I don’t need anyone to prompt me before I do what I can do.”
We are excited to celebrate Veronica Sebuava as our Catalyst for the month of September, a Catalyst whose unwavering dedication, self-motivation, and passion for learning have set her apart as a true community leader.
Veronica is the DigiLit strand lead at Abutia Spot and also leads projects on educational equity. She is very passionate about supporting learners to build their basic reading, speaking and writing skills and using these skills to operate in online environments. This fuels her dedication to engaging learners in club activities and guiding them to complete and submit their monthly challenges.
With excitement, she shared, “I feel genuinely surprised and grateful. It was encouraging to know that my efforts were noticed and appreciated. It has motivated me to keep contributing to the team and to support others the same way they have supported me.”
One thing that sets her apart is her belief in giving her best to her community without waiting for reminders or supervision. She embodies this principle in how she supports and engages learners at the Spot during club activities and how she works with fellow Catalysts during major Spot and community events.
Veronica oversees the Book Lending Programme at Abutia. Ensuring that all learners have access to age appropriate reading materials and are also inspired to read every day to improve their literacy skills. This has led learners at Abutia Spot to adopt a reading lifestyle.
As an administrator of Abutia Rhema Basic School, she juggles classroom responsibilities, school administration, EduSpots activities, and personal duties. Time is her biggest challenge, yet she manages her time so well to ensure that she is able to give her best to each role assigned to her.
With gratitude, she expresses deep appreciation for fellow catalyst Wise Afadzinu, whom she describes as a constant source of support and encouragement.
She expressed, “Every learner has the potential provided they are given the opportunity and exposure.” and highlights Beatrice Nutsogah , a spark who now confidently speaks and writes basic English, an inspiring transformation born out of consistent exposure and support.
Her leadership style has evolved beautifully, she now listens more, embraces empathy, and encourages expression from all learners. She has also strengthened her digital skills, learning to use tools such as: Scratch, Excel, Microsoft Office, Zoom and Google Meet. She laughs about her first chaotic experience using Zoom, but today, she confidently navigates digital platforms, a proof of her growth mindset.
Veronica draws her greatest motivation from the learners. She mentioned, “The impact that EduSpots is instilling in these young ones is greater than financial support.” The passion learners exude towards reading, speaking, writing and use of digital tools reminds her why she must continue giving her best.
To her fellow Catalysts, she advised, “Whatever you sign up to do, don’t look at setbacks; push through as if it’s the last thing you depend on.” This resilience defines her journey as a changemaker in her community and beyond. To promote unity and teamwork, she added, “Being there for one another is key. Don’t wait to be prompted before you give your best. The strands do not only equip the Sparks; they also help catalysts learn new skills. Immerse yourself fully when the time comes. Remember, I AM BECAUSE OF YOU AND YOU BECAUSE OF ME.”
While she appreciates the milestone of reaching 50 communities and over 400 Catalysts in a decade, she dreams of EduSpots’ expansion to more communities and supporting more local leaders to lead change in their communities through education.
Congratulations to Veronica for her commitment to leading meaningful change in her community, transforming learners by supporting them to enhance their literacy and digital skills, and continuing to improve her professional and personal development through continuous learning and skills acquisition.
