Phidelia Nyatuame is our Learner of the Month – February 2026

“I always thought I was born shy, but that was a wrong mindset. I have found my voice and confidence through Ignite Equity activities.”

Phidelia Nyatuame is a 14-year-old student of Abutia Rhema D.A Basic School and an Ignite Equity Spark at the Abutia Spot. She was selected for her strong growth in confidence and active participation through the Ignite Equity programme.

Before joining the Ignite Equity club, Phidelia struggled with stage fright and found it difficult to express herself in class and group discussions. She often remained silent and shied away from sharing her ideas. Through her involvement at Abutia Spot, she began participating in Ignite Equity sessions, which supported her growth.

Through consistent participation in Ignite Equity club activities, Phidelia gradually built her confidence and communication skills. She moved from being silent to actively speaking during discussions and activities. A key moment in her journey was when she volunteered to take part in a play on stereotypes, showing courage and a change in mindset.

The safe and supportive environment at Abutia Spot, along with guidance from Catalysts, helped her overcome fear and develop self-belief. She also gained a better understanding of equity, learning that both boys and girls deserve equal opportunity, with more support given to the learner who needs it most, and not because of their gender.

Phidelia now speaks confidently in front of her peers and actively participates in sessions. She has improved her communication and teamwork skills. Her growth is encouraging other shy learners to speak up and take part in activities. She is becoming a positive example within the Spot.

Reflecting on her growth, she shared, “I always thought I was born shy, but that was a wrong mindset. I have found my voice and confidence through Ignite Equity activities.”

Veronica, a Catalyst (local changemaker) at the Abutia Spot, also added, “Phidelia has grown from being very quiet to becoming confident and expressive. Her journey is inspiring other learners to believe in themselves.”

Phidelia hopes to continue building her confidence and take on leadership roles at the Spot.

The Ignite Equity strand equips young leaders to advocate for gender equity and inclusivity. Through monthly challenges and hands-on activities, learners develop leadership skills, address issues like gender stereotypes, and promote equity, creating a space where both boys and girls can thrive and drive positive change in their communities.
