Across Ghana, a growing movement of organisations is reimagining climate education, moving beyond theory to create practical, student-led and community-driven learning experiences that equip young people to become active leaders in climate action.
What is the CECOP?
Launched in 2025 with support from Gower Street Trust, the Climate Education Community of Practice (CECOP) was established to strengthen complementary climate education across schools and communities in Ghana. Over the past year, the initiative has brought together leading organisations to share ideas, explore innovative approaches and build stronger partnerships for climate and nature-based education.
Current members include AfriKids, RAINS Ghana, Rights & Advocacy Initiatives Network – Ghana, EcoCare Ghana, RoNAG, Climate Smart Training Programme, Orgiis, SUNG Foundation and Strategic Youth Network for Development (SYND), with EduSpots facilitating the process of learning.
Through monthly learning sessions, peer engagement and learning on WhatsApp and a national summit held in Tamale, members explored themes including student agency in climate action, greening teaching and learning, localising climate solutions, and strengthening systems for climate education.
The summit highlighted innovative approaches such as localised tree pedagogy, school gardens, climate-smart agriculture and climate ambassador clubs, while also reinforcing the importance of indigenous knowledge and community-led action in addressing climate challenges.
“It’s been amazing to bring together so many NGOs from across Ghana, and see how their creative ideas translate into practical and purposeful projects in diverse educational contexts, ranging from school gardens and climate smart agriculture to climate ambassador clubs.” – Sarah Abotsi-Masters, STEM and Environmental Education Specialist, EduSpots
