Celebrating Learner of the month of April – Thywill from Abutia Spot

We are happy to celebrate our learner of the month of April, Thywill, from Abutia Spot. Thywill is an active member of the Abutia EduKidz club, engaging in club and community learning activities to strengthen her speaking, reading and writing skills to build her confidence.

When Thywill first joined the club in January 2026, she was shy, watchful, letting the other learners speak for her. Then, slowly, she started building the confidence to speak and take part in group activities.

As part of their March EduKidz Monthly Challenge (project-based learning activities), learners were given a box of picture cards and a set of letters to look at the pictures, find the letters, build the words, and then write a story together. The pictures included a lion, a tree, and the river.

Thywill’s group chose theirs and began. Letter by letter, word by word. When it was time to write the story down, Thywill led her group in doing this activity. Gabriel and Judith, her Catalysts, were there to support each group in their learning through this playful learning activity.  When they were finished, they had a small story that belonged entirely to them.

A lion walks to the river

It sees a fish in the river

The lion sit on a rock under a tree

The forest is calm and quiet

Gabriel took a photo of the story and shared it with the EduKidz WhatsApp community of learning hub. After seeing the four-line story created by Thywill and her team from the Abutia Spot, Catalysts on the EduKidz hub celebrated the creativity of the team.

Thywill is now one of the first to speak when her Catalysts asks a question during claub activities. The younger learners in her group watch her and learn. She has stopped waiting to be chosen.

On sharing what she likes most about the EduKidz strand, she said: “I like it when we make the words. And when they said my story was nice, it made me happy. I want to write another one.”

Gabriel, a Catalyst at the Abutia Spot, reflected on Thywill’s growth, “She is young, but she always wants to come first. When you ask a question and others are still quiet, she just speaks up. That is the gift she gives this group. She brings them along with her.”

Thywill will keep building her confidence. Gabriel and Judith will keep supporting the learners at the Spot. And the EduKidz club sessions in Abutia will keep supporting learners in the community to write their own stories and build the skills to contribute to making positive change in the community.

Across Ghana, there are thousands more children like Thywill, curious, capable, looking for a safe space to be heard. What makes the difference is a changemaker like Gabriel showing up every week, a community learning space, and educational resources and training for a learner’s dream to be actualised and for communities to create the change they want to see through education.
