“Yamfo, a community traditionally well-equipped with educational facilities, initially lacked a public library due to the conversion of the community library into an administrative block for the College of Health.
Aisha Abdul Razak, an old student through EduSpots established the Yamfo Spot. She won a challenge that gave her seed money to renovate an abandoned classroom block. The establishment of the Spot has positively improved literacy of learners in the community especially Yamfo Islamic School where the Spot has been located. Thousands of students from different educational institutions/levels have had access to the Spot and thousands of books have been borrowed and returned successfully.
In 2022, the Literacy Club won the best performance in drama in English at the municipal and regional level. The Queen Mother of Yamfo Traditional Area honored the Drama Club with a GHc 3,000.00 award for their impressive performance in the English Drama competition, presented during her Birthday and First Anniversary celebrations.
The Spot has provided learners with free access to information, eliminating the financial barrier of purchasing books or academic journals. The Spot has also offered a wide range of resources, including books, magazines, newspapers, and online databases, all of which are available to members of the community to use free of charge. This access to information allows people to learn and grow, which is essential for personal and professional development. The Spot has also promoted literacy in the community. It has provided resources for early childhood development programs to adult literacy classes. It has helped individuals to improve their reading and writing skills.
The Spot has played a crucial role in bridging the digital divide, addressing the challenge of unequal access to technology in today’s digital era. Yamfo Spot has provided free access to computers, tablets and internet to many learners who cannot afford to purchase their own digital devices or pay for internet to use for online educational resources. The Spot has also provided a safe space for learners in the community. It provides a welcoming environment where learners can read, study, and engage with others. Additionally, the Spots has policies in place to ensure that all learners of the Spot feel welcome and respected. The STEM Club also wins Science and Mathematics competitions organized in the Community.
