The Donkorkrom Spot is situated in a town called Food Basket (Donkorkrom )at the heart of the African continent. It is located at Kwahu Afram Plains North Eastern Region (Koforidua being the capital).
Donkorkrom has always been called food basket because it’s main occupation was cultivation of cocoa, maize ,beans, millet, yam, cassava , plantain, cabbage, pepper, lettuce, carrot and rearing of livestock such as goat, cattle, hen ,pig, guineafowl and sheep. .Also, fishing is one of the major economic activities among the people near Volta Lake and River Afram. As a result of this, many school going children opted to go into fishing instead of schooling leading to low numeracy and literacy skills.
In 1997, Mr .Thomas Kudonu chose to be a door to door teacher. He devoted his time teaching everyone how to read and write in a school he built called community private school. Through video shows, the school organised writing and reading sessions. As a result of their ability to read, some became teachers (Mad Suzzy ,Sir Joseph) in the school, lawyers (Lawyer Kpeli Walase) ,engineers, medical doctors etc. Mr Thomas Kudonu also made a big contribution.
As the population kept growing, they have been working tirelessly to create a conducive environment for learning of English to take place. They approached NGOS and community stakeholders and Mr.Banah Isaac, a community member, was aware of the work that EduSpots does in education in the other parts of the country. They approached them and as soon as Eduspots became aware of the Spot’s concerns, they offered support to the community.
In 2015, they decided to put up a library and completed it in 2017 . With this, the ability to read and write has improved amongst the school going children from nursery to J.H.S and reading is now part of the culture as a community.
Additionally , Eduspots has introduced the Spot to digitalisation. The Spot has received two tablets, WiFi and African story books to enhance English teaching experiences. The food basket (Donkorkrom ) has now played a role in shaping the future of the children in its community, and the Spot strongly believe that they will produce prominent people from the region.
