Mpatano

Ampatano is a community along the coast of Western Region. It’s mainly a fishing community. The inhabitants practice subsistence farming as well.

The community first joined the EduSpots network in 2017 even though it did not have a physical library space. This was borne out of the burning desire of the community leaders to improve educational equity among its children. The leaders subsequently dedicated one of its community center rooms to be used as the library.

Though the community was aware of the library, patronage was low due to the lack of knowledge about how to effectively access the library. In 2023 however, an EduSpots’ Catalyst at Asemkow Spot reintroduced Faustina Mensah to EduSpots, she was a teacher at Ampatano School. In 2023, Faustina joined one of the EduSpots’ training academies at Elmina. Upon her return, she shared with the staff at Ampatano School who expressed interest to join the network leading to the launch of Ignite Girls strand at the Spot, around August 2023.

In February, an EduSpots team visited the Spot to encourage more teachers to become Catalysts. Two teachers were subsequently selected for the 2024 Catalyst Leadership Workshop in Elmina. This sparked a wave of enthusiasm among the team.

Currently, the Spot has different reading materials, two tablets & a router, a learning table with two benches to help learners read at the library. They partake in education strands such as the Edukidz, Ignite Equity, EcoSTEM, EduLit and Spot Lead.

The positive changes have been widespread, affecting learners, Catalysts, and the community as a whole. Learners are now enthusiastic about visiting the library whenever it’s open. Monthly challenges have helped learners develop self-awareness and fostered meaningful conversations between learners and Catalysts. Parents have expressed a desire to contribute to the sustainability of the Ignite Equity Enterprise to assist the learners.

The Spot aspires for learners to expand their horizons and compete on a global scale in the future.
