Get to know our Catalyst of the Month for July!

Welcome back to our Catalyst of the Month spotlight, where we delve deeper into the brilliant backstories and inspirational insights of our wonderful local volunteers – without whom EduSpots would not be possible.

Each month a Catalyst is selected for this recognition of their hard work, dedication and commitment to EduSpots. We were delighted to be able to sit down with Patrick, our Catalyst of the Month for July 2024, and hear more about his story.

Q: Hello Patrick, please introduce yourself?

Hello, my name is Patrick Atta Essien, and I’m a Catalyst at Asemkow Spot, and a professional teacher at Asemasa Basic School. I’m passionate about education and community developments.

Q: Why did you decide to become an EduSpots’ Catalyst?

I joined EduSpots because I believe in its mission to provide quality education and opportunities for all. I was drawn to the innovative approach and community-driven spirit. Also, the project leader at Asemkow Spot, Mr Felix Acheampong, was very helpful in introducing me to the organisation.

Q: Do you feel that your childhood impacted your decision to join EduSpots?

Well, growing up as a student I didn’t have access to an organisation like EduSpots, but I did have access to a community library. Every weekend or recess-time during school, I would go there with family and friends to read. We would also be able to borrow some books from the librarian. This experience has fostered a passion within me for libraries and widely-accessible education that motivated me from the onset, so when I finally heard of EduSpots I was really inspired to join.

Q: What is your philosophy on education?

My philosophy on education is centered around the following core beliefs:

  • Inclusive and Accessible
  • Student-centered
  • Holistic Development
  • Community-driven
  • Lifelong Learning

In my work with EduSpots, I strive to implement the following objectives:

  • Supporting Community-Led Initiatives
  • Fostering Collaborative Learning
  • Integrating Real-world Applications
  • Embracing Flexibility and Adaptability
  • Celebrating Diversity and Inclusion

Q: Can you please tell us a bit more about your Spot?

Asemkow Spot was the fifth Spot to be built in the EduSpots network. It was built in 2017. This Spot was created with the help of Francis Yeboah. The Spot is a school-based Spot which currently runs all strands. It is a mother Spot which means that it mentors other Spots nearby like Funkoe and Ampatano, and also mentors other evolving Spots like Asemasa, Boekrom, Kajebirl, as well as a Spot in the Ahanta Wassa enclave. We offer  workshops, mentorship and resources to bridge the digital divide in our communities!

Q: Please tell us about the dynamics of the Asemkow Spot. How are roles distributed among Catalysts?

Our team is collaborative and dynamic. Roles are assigned based on strengths and interests. We have a leader, facilitators, and support members. We work together to plan, execute, and evaluate our programs. In particular, the monthly challenge for each strand is where we make sure our team can come together to champion each hurdle of the month.

Q: What are some challenges you have encountered in your roles at the Asemkow Spot?

Challenges include limited resources, participant engagement, and adapting to changing community needs. Moreover, the network issues make it difficult for our team to join Zoom coaching sessions. Also, our sister community Asemasa shares our learning materials and limited space.

Q: How can you overcome these challenges?

To overcome these challenges, we prioritise community engagement, seek partnerships, and continuously assess and adjust our strategies. Moreover we practice consistency and never give up on tackling those obstacles. I personally believe obstacles are there to make one know how to critically find the best possible solution to solve those challenges!

Q: What are your plans for the future of your Spot?

My plans for the future of our Spot include expanding our programs, establishing partnerships with local organizations, and exploring new technologies to enhance our impact. I want to be able to change the lives of the less knowledgeable learners so they are able to read and write!

Q: In the next 10 years, how do you see EduSpots evolving?

In the next 10 years, I envision EduSpots as a thriving, global network of community-driven learning hubs, making quality education accessible to all. Here’s a possible future scenario:

  • Expanded Reach: EduSpots has established a presence in numerous communities, with hundreds of Spots serving diverse communities.
  • Diverse Programs: EduSpots offers a wide range of programs, including digital literacy, skills training, mentorship, and entrepreneurship support, addressing various community needs with the five educational strands.
  • Collaborations and Partnerships: EduSpots has formed strategic partnerships with organizations, governments, and industries, amplifying its impact and resources.
  • Community Leadership: EduSpots has empowered local leaders and Catalysts to drive community development, fostering a sense of ownership and sustainability.

Q: Do you have any hobbies or interests besides your volunteer work?

I love reading and love to be among like minded people who share the same interest with me, who are always optimistic about doing something to positively impact the lives of people.

Q: Finally, do you have any advice for other Spots and Catalysts?

My advice to other Spots and Catalysts is to:

  • Stay Community-focused
    • Listen to the needs and concerns of your community
    • Involve community members in decision-making processes
    • Ensure programs and initiatives align with community goals
  • Be Adaptable
    • Embrace change and be willing to pivot when necessary
    • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices
    • Continuously assess and adjust your strategies
  • Leverage Teamwork
    • Foster a collaborative environment
    • Recognize and utilize individual strengths
    • Support each other through challenges and success

In summary, I am thrilled and privileged to be part of this big family!
